There are a large number of websites in which you can find airline tickets at a low cost. With gas prices so high this summer, it may even be cheaper to fly than to drive to your summer destination. Especially if you're traveling solo. For example, I searched online a few days ago to see how much it would cost for me to get from home (Indianapolis, IN) to New York City. I first found out the distance in miles (710 miles), multiplied it by two (for the round trip), and then added an extra 180 miles for traveling in and around the city. In total, my trip would be 1600 miles. I just bought a new car this past year and I can get up to 35 miles per gallon on the highway, or 26 miles per gallon in the city. |
I averaged the two together to get an average of 30 miles per gallon for the trip. By dividing the total 1600 trip miles by my 30 miles per gallon, I figured I would need at least 53.3 gallons of gas to arrive in NYC. With gas an average of $3.25 in the Midwest, my total trip cost in gas would be $173.33. In addition, I would need to add in at least $25 a day for parking in NYC. If I stay in the city three days, I would use $75 for parking, bringing my grand total of the trip to almost $250. In addition to the $250, I would also use almost 12 hours each way to drive to NYC and home. That would use one extra day of my vacation time off of work to supplement my drive time.
After figuring the math, I thought I would check to see what kind of cheap airfare I could find online. By using a search engine, I found a large number of websites with airline tickets at a low cost. First I noticed that the flight one way with one lay over would take around four hours—much shorter than the 12 hour drive time. Comparing both ways, I would save 16 hours by flying! Next, I used the website to display departure and arrival dates within a day of my ideal travel. I also choose to look at flights taking off before 7:00 a.m., or those with many connections. Doing this lowered my fares considerably. By being flexible with dates, times and connections, I was able to find a round trip ticket for $209 including taxes and fees.
